Domestic Violence Cases rise in Pakistan: UN Women

Domestic Violence Cases rise in Pakistan according to the statistics of the various international organizations. Domestic violence is an aggressive behaviour from men towards the spouse and children, in the home.

According to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Pakistan statistics, the 70% to 90% of Pakistani women do face various forms of domestic violence.

Various forms of domestic violence in Pakistan includes abusing a person physically, mentally, and emotionally.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) the most common types of abusive behaviour at home includes shouting 76 percent, threatening 49 percent, pushing 47 percent, punching 40 percent, slapping 52 percent, and kicking 40 percent.

According to the statistics of UNFPA, around 32 percent of Pakistani women experience violence in Pakistan. Additionally, more than half of such victims of domestic violence neither reported it, nor got any support.

The scenario worsened in 2022 according to the reports of the Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO) and the Center for Research, Development and Communication (CRDC).

It is reported by SSDO and CRDC that the cases of domestic violence, sexual abuse, kidnapping, and human trafficking of women and children were relatively increased as compared to 2020 and 2021.

In the Sindh province, total 1,865 cases of women abductions were reported along the the 142 cases of sexual abuse against women. There were another 139 cases recorded of domestic abuse. The most of the cases were reported in Karachi and Hyderabad.

In addition to the above, 109 cases of women trafficking and 80 cases of honor killing were also reported in 2022.

According to United Nations (UN) Women’s prevalence data on different Forms of violence against Women is as below:

  • Around 24.5 percent of married women aged 15 to 49 do experience physical and/or sexual violence by the partner at least once in their lifetime[1].
  • Around 14.5 percent women aged 20 to 24 years who were first married or in union before age 18 in the last 12 months[2].
  • Child Marriage :18.3 percent cases were reported[3].

According to a report by UN Women, Domestic Violence cases rise in Pakistan in the recent time.
