Top 10 Popular Archeological Museums

Top 10 Popular Archeological Museums of Pakistan is the list of museums that are most visited by local and foreign visitors. This list of museums is compiled on the data shared by the Pakistan Bureau of Statists (PBS).

Pakistan is a country that is has a very rich and colorful culture. In addition to culture, history of Pakistan, before partition and after partition is very eventful.

Pakistan has some of the best museums in the world. In this blog, I have compiled a list of top 10 popular museums in Pakistan that are most visited by the local and foreign visitors.

Out of these 10 museums, 3 museums are located in Islamabad, 4 are located in Punjab province and 3 are located in Sindh province.

10. National Museum of Pakistan, Karachi

The National Museum of Pakistan is at number 10 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 15,000 to 17,000 visitors. Around 200 foreigners also visit this museum, yearly.

The National Museum of Pakistan is located in Burns Gardens Karachi, Sindh.

It was established in Frere Hall on 17 April 1950, replacing the defunct Victoria Museum. The building was completed in 1969.

9. Quid-e-Azam Birth Place, Karachi

The Quid-e-Azam Birth Place Museum is at number 9 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 18,000 to 20,000 visitors. Each year, around 100-150 foreigners also visit this beautiful museum.

It is located in Kharadar district of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.

The Quaid-i-Azam Birthplace Museum is also known as Wazir Mansion. It is a former family home and the birthplace of the father of the nation, M. A. Jinnah.

8. Mohenjo-Daro Museum, Larkana

The Mohenjo Daro Museum is at number 8 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 55,000 to 60,000 visitors. Around 160-200 foreigners also visit this museum, yearly.

This museum is world-famous due to tis historic value. The visitors can see giant murals and recreations and seals.

This museum preserves the civilization marks of Mohenjo Daro. This city is way back old near 3500 B.C and it is located on the banks of the great Indus River.

Visit hours of this museum are 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM in summer and 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in winter·

7. Harappa Museum, Sahiwal

The Harappa Museum is at number 7 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 85,000 to 90,000 visitors. Around 260-300 foreigners also visit this museum, yearly.

Harappa Museum is located in eastern Punjab, Pakistan. The Harappa civilization was situated on left bank of a Ravi River, west of Sahiwal city.

The building of Harappa museum was built in 1967 by the Government of Pakistan.

6. Lahore Museum, Lahore

The Lahore Museum is at number 6 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 1,45,000 to 1,75,000 visitors. Each year, around 1200-1300 foreigners also visit this beautiful museum.

The Lahore Museum is in red-brick building that is situated on Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam also known as the Mall Road. This museum was opened in 1894.

An approximately 60,000 artefacts are at display in the Lahore Museum. These artifacts are important and valuable historically, culturally and artistically. It has a wonderful display of Islamic, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain histories.

5. Pakistan Museum of Natural History

The Pakistan Museum of Natural History is at number 5 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 1,70,000 to 2,00,000 visitors. Around 300-350 foreigners also visit this museum, yearly.

This museum was established in 1976 and it is a public natural history museum situated in Islamabad.

This beautiful and informative museum has exhibits and galleries full of information related to the ecology, geology, and paleontology of the country.

4. PMDC Khewra Mines Museum, Chakwal

The PMDC Khewra Mines Museum is at number 4 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 2,90,000 to 3,00,000 visitors. Each year, around 1100-1200 foreigners also visit this beautiful museum.

PMDC Khewra Mines Museum is part of the great Khewra Salt Mines and it has been has been developed by PMDC. It is a tourist resort that PDMC has built with its own resources.

This beautiful museum is located in Khewra City is also known as “The Kingdom of Salt”. There is also a beautiful mosque made of different shades of rock salt, that is worth to visit. 

3. Taxila Museum, Rawalpindi

The Taxila Museum is at number 3 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 3,00,000 to 3,25,000 visitors. Around 2700-3000 foreigners also visit this museum, yearly.

Taxila Museum is situated in Taxila, a tehsil of Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan. This museum is hub of wonderful collection of Gandharan art, that is expected from 1st to the 7th centuries CE.

This museum contains the objects that were majorly excavated from the ruins of ancient Taxila. This museum is worth-while to visit.

2. Lok Virsa Heritage Museum

The Lok Virsa Heritage Museum is at number 2 at our list of most visited and popular archaeological museums of Pakistan. This museum has annually 3,10,000 to 3,40,000 visitors. Around 1300-1500 foreigners also visit this museum, yearly.

The Pakistan Lok Virsa Heritage Museum is also known as Pakistan National Museum of Ethonology. This museum was built in 1982 and it has a covered area of more than 20,000 square feet.

The main themes of this Heritage Museum is history of Pakistan, living traditions of the people of Pakistan, and rich culture of Pakistan.

1. Pakistan Monument Museum

The Pakistan Monument Museum is the most popular and most visited archaeological museums of Pakistan. This is Pakistan’s the most busiest, the most beautiful and the most informative museum. This museum has annually 4,00,000 to 4,50,000 visitors. Each year, around 1100-1200 foreigners also visit this beautiful museum.

The heritage museum exists in the Pakistan Monument’s arena that is located on the western Shakarparian Hills in Islamabad, Pakistan.

This museum shows the timeline of Muslims’ struggles in 18th century and 19th century. The major events of pre-1947 and the post-1947 are covered through paintings, maps and other historic objects.

This beautiful museum also has distinct Quid-e-Azam section and Allama Iqbal section that display valuable belongings of both leaders of Pakistan.
