Divorce Cases in Pakistan are historically High

Divorce Cases in Pakistan are historically high since 2019 and a few key reasons are intolerance, financial instability and domestic violence.

According to Gilani Research Foundation Survey for 2022, 60% of Pakistanis think that the divorce (طلاق) and Khula (خلع) rate has increased in the country.

According to a report, during the first seven months of 2022, the courts have approved more than 6,000 divorces, while another 7,000 divorce petitions are pending before the court.

Only 831 of the cases were resolved through reconciliation at the union council level, while 2,642 are pending in courts.

Most of such cases have been delayed because they have not been pursued.

Divorce Statistics in Pakistan since 2019

In Rawalpindi, the family court issued 11 notices of Khula, while in 74 cases husbands filed for divorce in January, 2022. 

In Lahore, The highest number of divorces in the district was recorded in the city tehsil at 11,879, followed by 6,656 in Shalimar and 5,679 in Cantt tehsil.

In August 2022, up to 500 divorce cases were filed in Lahore’s civil family courts by women in a span of just 10 days.

In 2019 in Karachi, 11,143 cases were filed, out of which 4,752 disposed of effecting 2,000 women divorced in 2019 affecting 2100 children.

In 2020 in Karachi, 4,943 cases of divorce and Khula were filed in the first 6 months.

In 2021 in Karachi, 10,312 cases of divorce, Khula, guardianship, and maintenance whereas 13,000 cases are still waiting for the verdict in family courts of the Rawalpindi district.

In 2022 in Karachi, 24,157 cases of divorce were reported out of which 13,540 men divorced their wives and 9,827 women filed cases for Khula.

According to Pulse consultant, Around 68% of the population is married and 0.57% are divorced in Pakistan.

Common reasons of divorce in Pakistan

According to court documents, most of the reasons cited when seeking divorce were daily arguments, joint-family system, financial hardness, unemployment of husband, intolerance, domestic abuse, violence, and extramarital affairs.

The data of divorce cases filed in courts acclaimed the basic reasons of divorce are intolerance and lack of patience, especially among new couples. It was reported that Many weddings just lasted three to four months.

According to the complaints filed by women, joint family system is one of the stronger reasons of separation as women want to live a separate life just with their husbands.

A fair ration of such women acclaim that they can’t have privacy and balanced life in a joint family system.

Consequences of Divorce

The true heartbreak and actual victims of divorce are children. According to reports, just 50,000 to 60,000 children are affected due to divorce and hula in Karachi, only.

Brought to court with little to no information on what is happening, children can be seen bawling when they learn that they will now only live with one of their parents.
