The WTO announces Internships for 2023-24 year for the students of various disciplines in Switzerland, China and other countries.

The internship and youth professional program of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is a premier program that aims to help the graduates and young professionals from least developed and developing countries to expand their knowledge.

1. About Internships for 2023-24

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat offers a variety of internship programs for post-graduate students enrolled in MS and PhD programs. 

WTo makes selection of these internships on the basis of merit, taking account of intended eligibility criteria, academic qualifications and technical expertise of the respective field.

WTo offeres there internship programs for the Masters and Doctoral studies in various disciplines. Two out of three internships programs are reserved for students from developing countries and least developed countries.

  • WTO Internship Program (Up to 6 months)
  • China’s LDCs and Accessions Program (Up to 10 months)
  • WTO Support Program for Doctoral Studies ( for 3 to 6 months)

1.1 General Responsibilities

Interns under this programme are placed in the Accessions Division of the WTO. The work of this division is to facilitate the negotiations between WTO members and countries/customs territories seeking to join the WTO.

Assignments given to interns are intended to enhance their understanding of trade law, economics and trade policies more generally. The needs of the division are balanced with the capacity-building needs of the interns. Under the supervision of a professional staff member, interns are expected to assist the division in its regular work.

1.2 Duration

The internships are for minimum 3 months and maximum 6 to 10 months.

1.3 Remuneration and benefits

Interns under the program receive a Daily Allowance (DA) of USD 67 inclusive of weekends.  In addition to the DA, travel expenses such as economy class air fare is covered .

For internships in Switzerland, interns need medical health insurance coverage and interns are responsible for organizing their own health insurance.

2. Application Details

Following are the details of applications:

2.1 Eligibility

A candidate must:

  • be a national of a WTO member state or a country or customs territory engaged in accession negotiations
  • be a national of a least-developed country (LDC) or developing country
  • have completed his/her undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, law, political science, international relations), and have completed at least one year of his/her postgraduate studies
  • be no older than 30.

2.2 How to apply

Interested candidates, who meet the above criteria, should complete their application to be considered:

There is no opening or closing date for applications.  Internships may be offered at any time during the year.  A maximum of five internship positions are available per year.
