The Youngest Civil judge of Pakistan

The Youngest Civil judge of Pakistan was Justice(R) Muhammad IIyas who was born on 1 October, 1931 in Gujrat, Punjab.

Justice(R) Muhammad IIyas passed the examination enabling him to become a Civil Judge in July 1952 at the age of 20 years 9 months.

In 1948, he graduated from Zamindar College Gujrat at the age of 17 years. He passed L.L.B from the University of Punjab and won the Gold Medal.

In 1952, at the age of 20 years, he started his practice in Gujrat High court.

He appeared in competitive exam called Provincial Civil Service-Judicial PCS (J) examination in 1952. He became the civil judge in July, 1952 at the age of 20 years and 9 months.

In 1991, due to such an amazing achievement, the name of Justice(R) Muhammad IIyas was also recorded in the Guinness Book of World Record as “Youngest Judge”.

However, Marc L. Griffin of USA broke his record and he became a Justice of the Peace, assuming the post on 19 February, 1974. However, Griffin claimed his record in 2011.

Justice(R) Muhammad IIyas served at various posts of district and session judge in Gujrat. Later On, he became the Judge of Lahore High Court.

He also attended a training in Legislative Drafting in USA . He also served in the committee that was responsible for framing new constitution of the country and that constitution was approved in 1973.

In 1978, he was appointed judge of Lahore High Court in 1978. He also remained Chairman of Federal Service Tribunal.

In 1992, he was appointed judge of Federal Shariat Court. In 1994, he was appointed judge of Supreme Court of Pakistan. He also remained Chief Justice of Lahore High Court.

He was also a regular writer in newspapers and magazines.

The former supreme court judge, Justice(R) Muhammad IIyas passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2021.
