Lake Turkana Wind Power Project
Lake Turkana Wind Power Project

Africa’s Largest Wind Form is in Kenya and is operational for last a few years. This wind farm situated in Lake Turkana in northern Kenya is one of the largest units to produce green energy in the world.

The Africa’s largest wind power plant is constructed in Kenya to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and for capacity building of green energy.

Kenya aims to move to meet its ambitious goal of 100% green energy by 2030 and installation of this Africa’s largest Wind Farm is one of the efforts to achieve this goal.

1. Kenya Vision 2030

The wind form is one step towards the Kenya Vision 2030 where Kenya aims to improve its power grid and achieve aim of green power by 2030.

Kenya has made great strides in renewable energy in recent years and is considered to one of the few African nations making progress toward clean power.

Another wind farm in Kipeto, Kenya has sixty general electric turbines that produce 102 MW electricity to Kenya’s power grid and this electricity is used to support more than 0.25 million houses in Kenya.

Kenya is currently generating more than 70 percent of the its electricity from various renewable sources including wind, hydro and geothermal energy projects.

Kenya’s reliance on green energy sources is commendable as Kenya’s percentage of green energy generation is more than three times the global average.

Since, one out of four Kenyans doesn’t have access to electricity in rural areas – does not have access to electricity. Whereas, due to such green energy power projects, Kenya is emerging as a global leader in renewable energy.

Resources revealed that the cost of this wind farm was around 775 million us dollars and this mega projects will help the people of Kenya to ensure better housing, improved health care, increase jobs and better food security.

This wind farm at shores of Lake Turkana that is located in northern Kenya has more than 360 power turbines.

The aim to install this wind farm was to increase country’s power capacity up to 13 percent and give electricity to tis people at a lower cost.

This Kenya’s unique wind farm project has capacity of generating more than 310 MW.

The Lake Turkana wind power plant is being run by a private consortium in Kenya, Africa. Africa’s Largest Wind Farm is in Kenya is one of its own kind.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IREA) has appalled Kenya’s policy of being rich in the renewable energy sources including hydro, wind, the sun, and other sources.

The Lake Turkana project is one of several large-scale renewable energy schemes to be developed on the continent in recent years.
