Mirny Mine - A Wonder Hole

Mirny Mine – A Wonder Hole is world’s deepest hole in Mirny that is in Russia and it is called Mir mine or Mirny mine. The the Mirny Mine is located in the Sakha Region of Siberia, Russia.

Since 195, this world’s largest diamond mine is one of deepest excavated holes on earth is 1,755 ft (525 m) deep and 3,900 ft (1,200m) across.

The Mirny mine is so deep that this deepest diamond pit can suck a plane into it, and this is called Mirny Mine Phenomenon.

Opened in 1957, at its height it was producing 10,000,000 carats a year.

Mirny mine is the second largest hole on earth.

It closed operations in 2004. Below the city of Mirny was built right up the edge of the open pit mine.

The diamonds were both jewelry and commercial grade stones used in optics, communication, diamond coating as well as commercial and medical lasers.

In 195, the development of this wonder land mine was initiated. However, the working on this mine was extremely difficult dur to extremely harsh and frozen climate conditions of Mirny.

The engineers decided to do most of the work in the brief summer. However, in the Summer, the ground used to turn into slush and there was need that buildings are raised on piles to save them from sinking.

Before it’s operation was closed in June 2001, the Mir mine was the first and the largest diamond mine in the Soviet Union. The surface operation of Mirny mine was lasted around 45 years.

In 1990s, the mine was operated by the Sakha diamond company and it was reported that the annual profits of this mine from diamond sales are around $600 million.

Afterwards, the mine was operated by Alrosa company, Alrosa was the largest diamond producing company in Russia at that time that had more than 3,600 workers.

It had long been anticipated that the recovery of diamonds by conventional surface mining would end. Therefore, in the 1970s, construction of a network of tunnels for underground diamond recovery began.

By 1999, the project operated exclusively as an underground mine. In order to stabilize the abandoned surface main pit.

After underground operations began, the project had a mine life estimate of 27 years. Mirny Mine – A Wonder Hole is worthy to visit.

The mine was recommissioned in 2009, and is expected to remain operational for 50 more years.

The underground Mir mine flooded again in 2017, trapping over 140 miners, all but 8 of whom were rescued
